Stefism #6: You may have been using too much bribery when you hand your son an ice cream cone and he says, "Will you give me a dollar if I eat this?"
Obviously, I’m all about bribery. But bribery is such a harsh word. I like to use the word motivation instead. I am not a briber, but a motivator. Has a much better ring to it, don’t you think? And it’s easy. To become a motivator, you just need to figure out what your kid cares about the most and then use it against him.
This can be used to your advantage in many ways. For example, let’s say your kid says, “Mom, can I have some candy?”
You say, “Sure, if you clean up the basement.”
If he really wants the candy, he will clean up the basement. Win-win. If he doesn’t really want the candy, he won’t go clean up the basement and you’re no worse off. Brilliant.
How do you motivate your kids?
