The Epic Barbie Cake Disaster
At some point in her life, many a little girl wants her mother to bake her a Barbie birthday cake. I had seen such a thing in one of my cookbooks and also researched them online. This was pre-social media.
My then three-year-old daughter hadn’t asked for one, but I knew she would love it.
It looked simple enough. Bake a cake in a bowl, turn it upside down, cut out a hole in the middle, stick Barbie in, and wa-la! The cake is Barbie’s dress. Cool, right?
I decided to attempt it. I followed the directions and baked a cake in a bowl the correct size. I turned it over, but hmm.
The “dress” only came up to Barbie’s knees!
Has anyone ever realized that Barbie’s legs are like 3/4 the length of her body? I mean, really. No one’s legs are that long. The controversy of Barbie’s disproportionate body must have started once moms started baking Barbie cakes.
So now the question was, did I rip Barbie’s legs off or bake another cake to make the dress larger?
I decided not to rip Barbie’s legs off seeing that my daughter only owned three Barbies. I also began to wonder why I was doing this in the first place. Did my daughter even like Barbies? Now I wasn’t so sure…
Anyway, I baked another cake and added it on top of the first cake. I tried to round them out and plopped Barbie in the middle. I applied the frosting and decorations of Skittles and Pull ’n Peel and stepped back to look at it.
It looked terrible.
The cake dress was so huge you couldn’t even tell it was supposed to be a dress. It was an epic fail, but it was pink and had candy, so my daughter would still like it, right?
That evening my parents and my brother’s family came over to celebrate. We finished dinner and I brought out the much anticipated Barbie birthday cake.
My brother and parents burst in hysterics at the sight of the cake.
My daughter shrank back in fear.
She wouldn’t even blow out her candles. “Mommy, I don’t want Barbie in my cake!”
For weeks after that my daughter would look at me and say, “Mommy, why was Barbie in my birthday cake? I didn’t want Barbie in my cake! Silly Mommy!”
Maybe someday, when I have a granddaughter, I will redeem myself and will make the most beautiful Barbie cake ever.
Hahahaha yeah right.
